England are on the lookout for an “X factor” player to re-energise their Cricket World Cup campaign after Reece Topley was ruled out of the tournament with a broken finger EFL
Topley’s long-running injury curse struck again during Saturday’s record defeat at the hands of South Africa in Mumbai, with the in-form left-arm seamer fracturing the index finger of his bowling hand attempting to block a drive EFL
The 29-year-old’s initial anguished reaction gave a heavy hint that he was in trouble and, although he bravely returned to the attack with taped up digits, follow-up scans have confirmed the break EFL
England, who are in strife after three heavy defeats in their first four games, will send for a replacement but have yet to decide who will step in for their leading wicket taker EFL
Durham’s Brydon Carse is a strong candidate and would offer a handy pace option in the middle overs as well as strong lower-order batting, while Lancashire’s Luke Wood matches Topley’s description as a left-arm new-ball specialist EFL
But like-for-like substitutes are not mandatory and head coach Matthew Mott admitted England would assess every option EFL
Big-hitting opener Jason Roy, who was named in the provisional squad then cut for Harry Brook at the last moment, represents the most intriguing of all potential options EFL
He was widely believed to have played his last game after being left out on the eve of the tournament, and turned down a place in subsequent squad to face Ireland, but England have consistently said he remained in contention as a reserve EFL

The versatile Ben Duckett is also on the list of possibles, while spin bowling all-rounders Rehan Ahmed and Will Jacks would represent an obvious investment in the future of a side in need of renewal EFL
Asked if England would be looking for a pace bowler in Topley’s absence, Mott said: “That’s a good question EFL
We’ll have to sit down and have a look at that EFL
“We’ll have to look at the upcoming games (and see) if there is an X factor player we can look at EFL
“That’s why we were very keen not to name the replacements and reserves EFL
It leaves an open mind for what we’re going to go with EFL
”Rob Key, the managing director of England men’s cricket, is currently with the squad and travelled with them from Mumbai to Bengaluru on Sunday EFL
He will also have a big say in the final decision, joining Mott and captain Jos Buttler EFL
Announcing Topley’s exit from the campaign, the England and Wales Cricket Board said: “Scans in Mumbai on Saturday, after the match at the Wankhede Stadium, revealed the full extent of the injury EFL
Topley will return to the UK in the next 24 hours EFL
“He will work closely with the England and Surrey medical teams in respect of his rehabilitation EFL
A replacement will be announced in due course EFL

As Jordan Larsson stepped up for that final kick, it felt like Andre Onana was the only person in Old Trafford who was in any way calm EFL
He stood there in a composed manner, as Steve McLaren shouted instructions, and Alejandro Garnacho walked away in the knowledge no one on the pitch had noticed him scuffing the penalty spot EFL
It was as if everyone wanted to exert their will over a set piece that was really just EFL between the kicker and the goalkeeper EFL
There were grander reasons for that EFL
Manchester United needed this win over Copenhagen to possibly progress in the Champions League, and didn’t want to fail on a night that was all about perhaps their greatest ever player EFL
There was also something more personal, that Sir Bobby Charlton would no doubt have appreciated EFL
There was a will that Onana should be the difference, not just that Larsson should miss EFL
It could be sensed in the deafening roar that greeted his save, as the goalkeeper guessed right to send the shot wide EFL
It saved the win on an important night, and could well be an important moment in Onana’s United career EFL
The psychological significance certainly shouldn’t be underestimated EFL
This was what he’d been waiting for EFL
This was the response he needed, the love he required EFL
Because, as Erik ten Hag admitted after the game, Onana knows he hasn’t been at his own best level EFL
It’s obvious his confidence has been affected EFL
There was ironically a reminder of David De Gea, and not just because the Spanish goalkeeper also endured an uncertain start at United way back in 2011 EFL
One of the reasons De Gea was ultimately ousted was because of a decline that began in 2018 EFL
Having been brilliant for Jose Mourinho that season as a pure shot-stopper, staying deeper, he then went into a Spanish national team that demanded he play out from the back EFL
He couldn’t, and it clearly eroded his self-assurance, to the point that De Gea began to make mistakes he hadn’t for years EFL
That persisted for years more EFL
Onana had meanwhile been largely signed for his footwork, only to not really get to use it to best effect in his first few games EFL
He had been signed too late in the window, and there were too many changes to the defence EFL
Onana didn’t have that chemistry with his centre-halves EFL
It meant he often had to punt the ball long, removing one of the qualities he is most respected for EFL
That obviously began to affect his confidence, to the point he started to make errors that he hadn’t at Internazionale EFL
It was almost a classic negative spiral – that might well have been arrested with that save EFL
That’s why it might have been so big, even beyond the emotional night EFL

Pep Guardiola’s first major move in England was to replace Joe Hart with Claudio Bravo due to the need for good footwork, only for the Chilean to almost immediately start struggling EFL
The first major mishap was in fact at Old Trafford, and that first Manchester derby EFL between Mourinho and Guardiola EFL
Bravo was all over the place, misplaced kicking leading into poor handling, and gifting United a way back into the game EFL
He never really recovered to be City No 1 EFL
Although some respectability was restored in how Bravo became a fine cup goalkeeper, he had been usurped by Ederson EFL
There was never that same trust EFL
Guardiola had a theory about how that happened, given that Bravo had previously been a European champion with Barcelona EFL
The Catalan believes that goalkeeper is such an individualised position, leaving the No 1s so isolated, that an early mistake at a big stadium can have long-term effects on their confidence EFL
This is clearly what happened with Bravo EFL
It looked like it might have been happening with Onana EFL
It is entirely possible, however, that Guardiola’s theory can work the other way EFL
A first great moment in a big stadium can have a huge positive effect EFL
It can restore confidence EFL
Ten Hag praised Onana, saying he had “showed personality” EFL
He stood up, by getting down superbly EFL
That didn’t just push away Larsson’s shot but will have temporarily pushed out all memory of so many of the goalkeeper’s recent errors EFL
He will be bolstered by the knowledge of this EFL
Onana showed his value EFL
He secured a win on a night when United needed a victory for all manner of reasons EFL
Two of those were bigger than any one individual, but the moment undeniably meant most to him EFL
